Dark Matter Starter Set: Science Fiction for DnD 5E

Created by Mage Hand Press

Dark Matter is a rip-roaring futuristic campaign setting, which lets you play DnD in Space without learning a new system.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Rook and Raven Reveal!
over 4 years ago – Wed, Aug 26, 2020 at 02:33:44 PM

Quick updates: we’ve got our first proper look at the Captain’s Log by The Rook and Raven, we’ve hit new social stretch goals, and we’re closing in on Roll20 integration!

The Captain’s Log

We’ve been working hard to get the perfect campaign journal made with the Rook and Raven, and they’re the best in the industry at this, so the end result was always going to be cool. Check out the cover:

Awesome, right? That’s a matte, soft-touch finish cover. Inside, the campaign journal comes with:

  • 3 D&D 5e character sheet sets
  • 2 wet-erase overlays
  • 3 spell lists
  • 15 pages of session notes
  • 10 pages of lines notes
  • 4 pages of square grids
  • 4 quad pages
  • 4 sketch pages
  • 2 background pages
  • And a ship-sheet page

And it’s available NOW as an add-on for $35. Add it to your order today!

Social Stretch Goals!

The player point ticker keeps going up, and we’ve unlocked a brand-new monster! These nasty-beasties are the graphids, which are at once some of the worst monsters you can encounter swarming your ship, and some of the most useful mounts you can hope to ride across an alien moon. I’ve done some particularly nasty things using their statistics: they have a trait called Swarm Tactics which makes them positively lethal with a kobold mount, since kobolds have Pack Tactics!

We also added a BONUS social stretch goal: a write-up for the planet Concordia! Read about a key Dark Matter planet, right near the galactic core, and its possible underhanded dealings with the Firm.

Check out all that in the FREE Encyclopedia Multiplanaria here! Remember to keep using the #DarkMatter5e hashtag and keep telling your friends about this Kickstarter as we round the corner into the home stretch.

We’re Halfway There! (Woah-Oh, Livin’ on a Prayer)
over 4 years ago – Tue, Aug 18, 2020 at 06:57:16 PM

I’ve been confidently assured that we’re halfway through the campaign (instead of a million years into it, as it sometimes feels like). Let’s sit down and take stock of where we’re at.

Spreading the Word

First of all, this is a heck of a first half! We’re north of 167K, which is all kinds of impressive.

We’ve got only three stretch goals remaining: the Roll20 module, printing Grax’s Club as a softcover with full art throughout, and printing One Hundred to Oni, also with full art. When you crunch the numbers, we’re very much at a tipping point: we’ve got a shot to hit every one of these stretch goals (a much better shot at hitting the first two), but it’ll take a lot of spreading the word to make that happen. If you haven’t already, tell your corner of the internet, tell your friends, tell your classmates (if you’re actually someone who’s going back to school), and tell your pets.

Blob Belcher

Player points are up to 5055, which means we've unlocked possibly the dumbest NPC in the Encyclopedia Multiplanaria: Blob Belcher. In lieu of a real explanation, I’ll just show you what an amoeboid with a floppy jelly mustache looks like:

Oh, and also remember that we’re running that meme contest, if you want to try to badly explain this campaign setting to people.

Orcs and Frontier Worlds
over 4 years ago – Fri, Aug 14, 2020 at 01:13:03 AM

Player points are up to 4498! That means we unlocked a new social stretch goal, this time a look at Blackpost, one of my favorite little locations in the ‘verse, especially for horror tales. Playable Orcs in Dark Matter!

Remember how we’re updating orcs in Dark Matter, and we even wrote a playable race for them? We thought that adding the playable race to the book itself would be impossible, since adding pages is a lot more complicated than it sounds, but we realized we can move two pages out of the introduction and fit the orcs in! That means Dark Matter is up to seven playable races! This inclusion will be in all physical and digital copies of Dark Matter going forward.

More Pancakes

Yes, we still have pancakes to show off! This one is the logo for our favorite legitimate businesspeople, who are definitely not the space mafia, the Firm.

Meme Battles, Wrothian Vampires, Streams
over 4 years ago – Wed, Aug 12, 2020 at 12:17:26 AM

Let’s catch up on the social stretch goals, and our rise to 150K!

Meme Contest

We’ve spent the better part of a month explaining Dark Matter to people, and have turned to increasingly bizarre methods to do so over the last week. With that in mind, we’re doing a contest! Using this format, make your best Explaining #DarkMatter5e meme and post them using the #DarkMatter5e tag. Do whatever you want for these memes, as long as it’s Dark Matter related and funny. I’m not a meme expert, so consider the format a very, very loose guideline.

Winners get a softcover copy of Taverns and Tankards, our premiere book of fantasy drunkenness. Three winners, continental US or Canada!

And because memes are 80% images, feel free to grab any of these pictures and format guides to make things easier. You can also grab anything you can from the Dark Matter core book or demo.

Social Stretch Goals

Player points have reached 4010 over the weekend! That means we’ve unlocked two new social stretch goals, which have been added to the Encyclopedia Multiplanaria: Bishop 212 and the Wrothian Vampire.

Bishop 212 is a neat little addition to our repertoire of NPCs, since you rarely see vect clerics, and you even more rarely see vect clerics with LED halos welded to their heads. He’s going to be a great addition to any campaign which needs more “Praise the Sun!”

The wrothian vampire is a bit more intense. It’s common knowledge that rogue wrothians don’t last long away from their ships, maybe a decade at most. Without psionic nourishment, they crumble to ash. So some rogue wrothians turn to… darker powers. The wrothian vampire is one such result, an undead psionic predator of unmatched power. Art by Matt Pegoraro (@mattpegoraro).

150!!!
over 4 years ago – Wed, Aug 12, 2020 at 12:17:09 AM

We’re at 150K, which means we’ve unlocked Monster Cards, and we’re on the way to getting Roll20 integration!! Let’s draw out the road-map for the rest of the campaign, and talk about where we go from here.

Monster Cards

You can now add Monster Cards to your order as an add-on for $15. Since these are going to require a lot more art than other cards, it’s a safe bet that they’re going to release in a later second wave of shipments.

300K and Beyond

If you haven’t noticed there were two sneaky additions to the stretch goals: a mystery goal at 300K and one at 400K. These were always in the works, but we kept them hidden until recently. Suffice it to say, they involve making physical books of Grax’s Club and One Hundred to Oni adventures, so if you’re interested in diving into those adventures, be sure to spread the word, so we can throw physical books at you!
